Electronic Cigarettes Are At Least 95% Safer Than Smoking

In 2015, the British Department of Public Health (PHE) officially announced that “electronic cigarettes are at least 95% safer than smoking.” The health authorities confirmed a statement in 2018, when it was time to launch a new campaign called “PHE Health Hazard Campaign”.

A year later, John Briton and Iles Bogdanovicka of the University of Nottingham Tobacco and Alcohol Research Center wrote a 2015 report.

After reviewing the report, PHE officially said, “The risk of using EC products in the existing market is very low, which may be far lower than smoking.”

In order to better understand the source of the statement “at least 95% safe”, another study was conducted by the International Expert Group of the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs.

Then, researchers developed a “multiple criteria decision analysis model to determine the relative importance of different types of hazards associated with the use of products containing nicotine”

After analyzing 12 products, 14 harmful standards were determined, of which 7 were harmful to users and 7 were harmful to bystanders.

“The formaldehyde concentration detected during smoking is 5 to 15 times higher than that of electronic cigarettes. It will cause discomfort when used at full load for 3-4 seconds.”

However, PHE’s response is to remind people that these results are obtained through machine testing, and that no electronic cigarette can smoke quickly and permanently.
